Бяло пране Byalo Prane Weiße Wäsche
Sound Performance & Installation @ Monheim Triennale – The Sound 2023
Byalo Prane is a sound performance that stages the ritual of washing laundry outdoors, inviting people in the public space to join in washing or bring their own clothes. The sounds created in the Rheinbogen Landscape Park where textiles, water and physical gestures merge with the surrounding urban and natural soundscape, gradually evolving into an amplified multichannel composition.
This compositional network of field recordings, spoken voices, water and textile sounds fragmentarily narrates a family history of migration from Bulgaria, bilingualism and an intergenerational estrangement from the idea of home. Byalo Prane recalls familiar and domestic sonic worlds in order to unfold an acoustic cartography and psychological topography of domesticity and belonging.
At the end of the performance, the laundry hung out to dry becomes a passage-like installation through which visitors can walk, experiencing their acoustically shielded surroundings in a newly altered way.
